If you are looking to travel between the two Scandinavian capitals of Stockholm and Copenhagen you’ve got a few options. The fastest option is by air, even taking into consideration getting to the airport and through security. Flight times are approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. You can buy a one way ticket from SAS for as low as $39. Taking a bus is the cheapest but longest option that will take at least nine hours. With all that said, taking the train is where it’s at. It is super easy, economical and quite scenic. SJ Trains has five to seven departures per day that will take about 5 hours. They offer trains with no transfers so you can sit back and relax.
Booking Your Ticket
If possible, book your tickets from SJ well in advance because trains do sell out. Also, the price of the ticket goes up as your date approaches. I booked 2 months in advance and paid 515 SEK (about $50 USD) for a second class ticket. First Class tickets give you a free meal and nicer seat, however, I was comfortable in second class. When you book your tickets directly from SJ, look for a train that goes from Stockholm C to Köbenhavn H without transfers.
On Your Travel Day
You won’t need to arrive more than 20 or 25 minutes early for your train. The train will arrive only about 10 minutes prior to departure. Stockholm Central Station is busy and a bit of a maze but it won’t take long to navigate to your platform. It is well marked in both Swedish and English. You can grab snacks a the train station or from the café aboard the train.
Arrival at Copenhagen Central Station
When you arrive at Copenhagen Central Station (or Köbenhavn H) don’t take the first set of stairs you see otherwise you might get turned about. Walk to the front of the train towards the main entrance to the train station.
Voila! You will be in the middle of Copenhagen and ready to start your next adventure!
